Basically, if the verbal or visual tone of my sentence could easily end with the word “stupid” (I use a more colorful word, but we’re keeping this PG-13), then that’s contempt. I’ve struggled with training myself to not show what I’m thinking, so I know the challenge ahead.įirst, it’s important to recognize when you’re being contemptuous. Increasing your self-awareness is how you learn to anticipate and control your reaction. Contempt happens when what you’re thinking becomes a visual expression similar to "did you really just say that?!" It’s the unspoken tone that screams loudly and makes a team member feel demoralized.Īnd maybe they did let you down, but how you handle it shows the kind of leader you are. It’s usually the look that follows an obvious statement or a dumb question. What they don’t expect and don’t want is the contempt that leaders often show when mistakes happen.
